A cloud floating in the wide sky that moved so beautifully slowly

When you encounter circumstances that find you delayed — even stranded in the unexpected — remember Jesus is with you in it. He can still use you. All the way.

It’s the last day of our 31-Day series and I am sitting on a plane that took off from Houston to make its way in the night to San Francisco.

I am seated between a man watching football and another flipping pages in his home improvement magazine. It has been a very long day. I have been on three flights at four different airports.

The first snow of the year fell beautifully yesterday in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, but good weather for airplanes — it does not make.

I walked through the body scan at security checkpoint and read more…

First snow of the year lightly blanketing orange bloom

“Hush away the hurry.
Put to rest the worry.
Come to quell and quiet me.
In this moment given…
Awake my soul to live this moment. Awake my soul,
 give thanks and hold it”
~ Shaun Groves, “Awaken My Soul”

First snow. Last leaves. There are moments God places in our hands that are brief. Will you take in that moment or let it pass?

I awoke to quiet.

I had slumbered late this morning, in a hotel room in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania.

I was far from home, attending the Relevant Conference and my west coast body still lagged three hours behind.

It was the day before I was to head home and I was hoping to gather myself some space — to capture on paper the stories swirled out of coffee sips, hellos, and hallway conversations.

As I turned the corner to head read more…

Feed Your Soul :: { Day 29 } Dessert For Your Soul

2011 October 29
by Bonnie Gray

On the days you feel nothing is happening in your life, it’s the most delicious time to hear God speak.

I love to bake.

Probably because I love fresh baked chocolate chip cookies.

But, I think dessert is a good side benefit.

Psst… Let me confess. I love getting lost following the recipe.

But what I love most about baking is the wonderful aroma that fills the house when the dough cooks in the oven.

There’s something special about waiting for the read more…

Feed Your Soul :: { Day 28 } Why Pray With Others

2011 October 28
by Bonnie Gray

Prayer is personal, but why do we feel moved to pray with others?

On my Super Shuttle ride to the San Francisco Airport, I struck up a conversation with a woman sitting next to me.

I noticed the papers she held in her hand.  They were questions from a Bible Study guide. I asked her what it was that drew her to spend time reading the Bible. I was intrigued by what she said.

I want to learn more about prayer.

Oh? I quietly commented, asking for more with my eyes.

Well, I’m thankful nothing bad has really happened in my life. No disease. You know, nothing awful like that…But, I feel I want to learn how to pray.

She wasn’t telling me much, but a person who wants to pray must want something from God.  read more…

I had never felt a need for a father.

That’s because since the age of five, I’ve grown up without one.

It’s what some people say about being born without an arm or a leg.  How can you miss something that you’ve never had?

Now that I’m older, I can confess.  I have carried a father wound.

I just never had the chance read more…

“Where you are most human, most yourself, weakest, there Jesus lives.” ~ Henri Nouwen.

Every now and then, Hubby and I make a drive to San Francisco to scrunch ourselves elbow to elbow for fresh baked croissants at Tartine Bakery.

It’s one place I’ve found that brings me back to France, just for a moment.

One day, as I was balancing my pastry, standing up against a counter, I noticed the guy read more…

Feed Your Soul :: { Day 24 } Small & Cozy Girls Night Out

“The next best thing to being wise oneself is to live in a circle of those who are.” ~ C.S. Lewis

Yesterday, I did something different.

Three girlfriends and I went out for dinner.

We met up after we put our kids down for bedtime and made our families dinner.

Of course, we were starving by the time we sat down to order.

What was different is that we chose a restaurant neither of us had been before.

It was fun.

Missed Hanging Out

Over the summer, I felt the need for read more…

Feed Your Soul :: { Day 23 } As a Mom

2011 October 23
by Bonnie Gray

Instead of keeping a list of criticisms we collect on our motherhood, what if we started noticing what God notices?

Life is not a test.

But, my days as mom with two boys under six often feel like they are.

Have I been patient — or did I lose it?

Did I spend enough 1-1 time with my kids — or did I overlook them in all the daily chores?

Should I have been firmer — or was it a case to give more grace?….

This list goes on and on. read more…

Feed Your Soul :: { Day 22 } As a Single Person

What feeds your soul as a single person?

We did it.

Yesterday, you and I passed the 21-day mark to the Feed Your Soul series here on Faith Barista.

So far, I’ve been pouring shots of faith that have focused on savoring our personal relationship with God.

We’ve been filling our soul by soaking in more of God — by getting more intimate with Him and vulnerable with Him.

But, feeding our soul also includes expressing that Christ-in-us beauty — by becoming lifegiving to others.

We were never made to be alone.  read more…
