Mother’s Day is a complicated and beautiful day.
Beautiful if you only hold perfect, unbroken memories and stories.
Complicated because all of us are touched by motherhood in different ways.
Even if we had the most wonderful, loving relationship with our mothers, all of us cannot bypass the soulful journey of motherhood.
Because we all were created as Eve, givers of life, we must each take the journey to find our voice as a mother. Because each of us is still a little girl inside, we must each find our way.
There are many stories I want to tell you. But first, let me pour you something warm.
Something sweet. Something soothing for your soul. To refresh you in the coming days leading up to Mother’s Day.
I hope you enjoy and share them with friends who need a shot of rest.
I’m serving up — 6 Soul Espressos: Restful Promises For Every Woman on Mother’s Day.
1. For the mom who needs to know she isn’t on her own:
“He tends his flock like a shepherd:
He gathers the lambs in his arms
and carries them close to his heart;
he gently leads those that have young.”
Isaiah 40:11
You are always God’s Beloved. Especially on days you feel empty and poured out.
2. For the woman who longs for the comfort of a mom:
“As a mother comforts her child, so will I comfort you.”
Isaiah 66:13
Fold yourself into Him. God will hold you and stay with you. Confide in Him.
3. For the woman who has left home or family to follow God’s story in her:
“I tell you the truth,”Jesus replied, “no one who has left home or brothers or sisters or mother or father or children or fields for me and the gospel will fail to receive a hundred times as much in this present age (homes, brothers, sisters, mothers, children and fields– and with them, persecutions) and in the age to come, eternal life.” Mark 10:29-30
Sometimes we have to let go of our idea of family in order to become a part of a God’s kind of family.
4. For the woman whose heart longs for a voice to call her mommy:
“He makes the barren in the house as a joyful mother of children.”Psalm 113:9
God made you to be life-giving. He honors your pain. He will make something beautiful birth in you and bring life to others through you.
5. For the single mom, who is carrying the fears and emotional weight of parenting alone:
When Hagar was abandoned by Abraham and sent away to fend for herself all alone in the wilderness with Ishmael, she cried out to God.
God “opened her eyes, and she saw a well of water; and she went, and filled the bottle with water, and gave [her son] drink” Genesis 21:19
God feels the fear in your heart when you feel overwhelmed by the need to emotionally and financially take care of you and your child and will come to your aid. He sees you. He will not abandon you. He will take care of you both.
6. For moms of all ages, who are letting go day by day — to launch their children into the world — whether they are five going to kindergarten, eighteen off to college in high school, twenty-eight to be married, thirty-forty-something starting their own families or fulfilling their lives in singleness.
“Behold, children are a gift of the Lord… Like arrows in the hand of a warrior, so are the children of one’s youth. How blessed is the [woman] whose quiver is full of them. They will not be ashamed.” Psalm 127:3-5
Our children don’t belong to us. They are a gift. That we open and offer back to the world by launching them, as arrows meant to fly and sing through the air, to go where God directs them to go.
May these six promises prompt some stories to rise within you. And may you share them with God in soulful conversation, with friends to confide in and keep you company during the day or night.
As for the childhood stories that shape me, I’ve captured some of the most tender, intimate ones in my book Finding Spiritual Whitespace: Awakening Your Soul to Rest.
I hope to meet with you between the pages of the stories I share in each chapter.
There are journaling prompts for you to uncover your stories — to create space in your life to rest — and feed your soul.
You will also find discussion questions that are conversation starters for you to share your stories together with one or two kindreds. Or a small group.
Together, let’s uncover the stories deep in our souls, to create space in our hearts and in our schedules.
So we can connect deeper to our hearts.
To God.
And each other.
Have you had a chance to see my story in this short video? (click here).
Sitting at Starbuck’s yesterday, before picking up Josh and Caleb from school, I struck a conversation with another mom. She was curious what I was working on and I showed her this short video. What followed was a story she shared with me. A total stranger became a fellow sojourner. I asked if she had a faith, but she said she wasn’t religious. I smiled because I knew God was meeting with her through me, as I listened to her story.

Thank you, Bonnie, for sharing these beautiful promises, beautiful words of scripture, with us today. Even those of us who had wonderful mothers still have bittersweet memories of good times and bad times. Thankfully God can redeem them all. Blessings to you, friend.
Thank you for these beautiful soulful promises, Bonnie. This promise in Isaiah 54 has often been a comfort to me as a mom:
“Afflicted city, lashed by storms and not comforted,
I will rebuild you with stones of turquoise,
your foundations with lapis lazuli.
I will make your battlements of rubies,
your gates of sparkling jewels,
and all your walls of precious stones.
All your children will be taught by the Lord,
and great will be their peace.”
It can tear our hearts out if our children do not know Jesus personally. I have often pleaded on the promise that the Lord WILL teach my children, especially in times of great stress when one of our sons got into drugs and sometimes we wouldn’t even know where he was at for months at a time. Sometimes I just have to pray and just trust God’s in control and He has the power to watch over our children wherever they are and to turn them towards Him.
Hi Bonnie,
I was touched by your video trailer for the book “Finding Spiritual Whitespace: Awakening Your Soul To Rest”. Thank you for sharing your heart. Here is a gift song from the Lord in response.
I want to live a better story today
I want to live a better story today,
To rest on Your promises of love.
My Jesus,
You came to save me and give me,
An abundant life.
My Jesus,
You came to die for me and reconcile me,
To God the Father.
I believe in You Lord,
Yet on so many days,
I forget to lean on You,
And go my merry way,
Till I find myself,
Lost in the world.
I want to live a better story today,
To rest on Your promises of love.
O Lord, You alone have the answers I need,
You alone are all that I need.
Why can’t I remember that?
Why do I continue to walk away?
O Lord, I want to come back to You today.
O Lord, I have sinned against You, Lord,
And I ask for Your forgiveness,
O Lord, have mercy on me.
Thank You Lord that You forgive me,
Thank You Lord that You remember my sins no more,
Thank You Lord for Your promises of love,
Thank You Lord,
In You, I will live a better story today.
Thank You Lord!

Love these promises from God! I needed to hear them today!
I saw your testimony on (in)RL Monday night (I had planned to watch during the conference but some unforseen circumstances kept me from it). Wow. I stood in my kitchen completely still just listening to your story.
So proud of you for stepping out and speaking to the masses of women (many of whom needed the validation from your story to know they aren’t alone).
(((HUGS))) what an adventure!!! 🙂
Thank you for the reminder… when my soul longs to be called a mommy and I haven’t had that. Along with no longer teaching preschool… I don’t have any children in my life right now. God sees and knows my pain and is working through it and creating something inside me to share with others.
The bible verse that speaks to me most on this topic is Isaiah 49: 15
““Can a woman forget her own baby
and not love the child she bore?
Even if a mother should forget her child,
I will never forget you.”
The ‘even if’ is the part I remind myself of, often. Even if I am forgotten by human parents, I am NEVER forgotten by God.
[…] I saw the writing prompt was “promise” over at Faith Barista , I started humming. I can remember singing this song when I was young. I looked it up on […]
I love your blog.. very nice colors & theme. Did you create this
website yourself or did you hire someone to do it for you?
Plz reply as I’m looking to construct my own blog and
would like to know where u got this from.
thank you
This was so beautiful Bonnie. Hearts are warmed everywhere today. xo
I know these verses are taken out of context, but I am greatly comforted by them:
(Jeremiah 31:16-17, NLT):
“But now this is what the LORD says:
“Do not weep any longer,
for I will reward you,” says the LORD…
There is hope for your future,” says the LORD.
“Your children will come again to their own land.”
I take great comfort in those verses. As the mother of two adult sons, sometimes it’s hard to feel like there’s not much I can do to solve their problems, or *fix their boo-boos* like I did when they were little. Sometimes I hurt for their struggles, and wish there was more that I could do beside just praying for them. However, prayer is a HUGE thing I can do for them. And I never forget that the Lord loves them more than I do. HE will reward my work, and He will watch over my boys…
GOD BLESS!
