And He who sits on the throne said, “Behold, I am making all things new.”
And He said, “Write, for these words are faithful and true.”
Revelations 21:5
You don’t have to wait until you’re completely new. To be you.
You don’t have to wait until you are free of doubt. In order to step into the light. To be seen.
You don’t have to try so hard. To understand everything.
These are the words I whispered to myself.
God’s calling us to a new way of living. He invites us to walk by faith.
When we hold onto Jesus’ hands, uncertainty isn’t something to be avoided, but a sure sign that we’re walking by faith — towards what our hearts really long to be.
Even if we may feel unsure or afraid, faith tells us we are actually pointed in the right direction.
A new way of living — as the beloved.
If we only walked the road we understood and could guarantee, we would never go where Jesus wants to take us. As the Beloved. His beloved.
We would be walking by sight instead.
It’s Okay
As I prepare to step out into some new beginnings, to dare to actually be God’s beloved, I find that I can go from inspired to discouraged easily.
Jesus always shows me just one next step. But, I become discouraged if I stop and try to figure out how things are going to end up — where one step today will lead. That’s when a simple idea suddenly becomes overwrought with worry and then, those worries choke the joy out of the idea.
And I end up doing nothing at all.
Because when we actually step out to be who God’s created us to be, we become vulnerable to the critical voices that once kept us safe — but left us unchange. To avoid hurt or uncertainty.
But, I’m learning to follow Jesus with my heart. And because this is a new journey, it’s okay to feel insecure and doubt because it only means I’m living in a new way.
New Way
This new way of living as the Beloved may feel disorienting and even can cause us to feel anxious —
I don’t understand how.
I can’t do this.
This is too hard.
When I pray these private words, sometimes only silence echoes back.
So much is happening outside of my control. Panic can set in. Panic happens when you fear life will change for the worse.
But, despair happens when you fear nothing will ever change. When you feel — you — will never change.
And that’s how I can easily retreat back to my old ways of staying safe and not trying anything new — as the Beloved.
But, I don’t want to retreat anymore, friends.
As I pictured myself walking on the same long, dusty road I’ve walked all these years: giving up on myself again,I whispered to Jesus —
I’ve come so far. I don’t want to give up. But, I don’t know what to do.
Jesus won’t leave us in the middle of our journeys.
As I whisper this prayer, a scene from the Easter story emerged in my heart.
The Journey Back
Two friends were walking with their backs bent, their hearts broken, and their hopes for tomorrow dashed to pieces.
Their hope had died on a cross.
And now, they were walking back to where they journeyed so far. They were returning to life as they knew it. They had lost all hope life could be different. That they could change.
They were walking in the opposite direction of where they once found hope.
So much so that they did not recognize who was walking with them.
These two friends from Emmaus spent the whole journey back by talking about how everything was ruined, wrong and lost.
Meanwhile a quiet stranger they met on the road patiently listened to the whole story, from start to finish, in all it’s exhausting play-by-play detail.
He didn’t interrupt. He didn’t judge. He didn’t say, “What’s wrong with you? It’s me! Can’t you see?”
No, instead Jesus asked them questions. He wanted to hear more.
Oh? What happened? Tell me more…
Jesus was curious. He wanted to hear all about their despair.
Listen. God’s Words To Us Today.
I heard Jesus tell me through this scene from the Easter story —
That silence you hear as you pour out your heart?
It’s me. I’m listening. To you.
Walking with you. Even as your heart’s running in the opposite direction of hope.
I’m with you.
I was so clouded by my anxiety, I couldn’t recognize Jesus’ presence.
Jesus is walking with me the same way He walked with two from Emmaus in Luke 24:13-35 —
And they approached the village where they were going, He acted as though He were going farther.
But they urged Him, saying,
“Stay with us,
for it is getting toward evening, and the day is now nearly over.“So He went in to stay with them.
When He had reclined at the table with them,
He took the bread and breaking it,
He began giving it to them. Then their eyes were opened
and they recognized Him…They said to one another,
‘Were not our hearts burning within us
while He was speaking to us on the road?”
Jesus broke bread with them, right in the midst of their place of retreat.
You Can Be New
Jesus is showing us what He showed to two friends from Emmaus thousands of years ago.
Jesus is showing us He is with us on the road.
Jesus is whispering to you and me —
You can be new.
Hearts burning. It’s the touch of God’s whisper on your heart and mine.
Our pounding heartbeats are resting against His strong and loving embrace.
I’m stepping out to be me. And so you can you too.
The Living Way
Putting off the old, putting on the new.
You and I can do both.
We can be happy, joy-filled, celebrating the resurrection of the new me Jesus is bringing back to life.
And in that same moment, we can also carry sorrow, imperfection and insecurity. Even despair.
Because both of the old and the new are found in His embrace.
Because in this journey of faith, both the old and the new are moving into the light.
It’s the living way. This faith of real flesh and bone. Spirit and soul. In you and me.
Our #OneWordLent Prayer Today
Lord Jesus,
I don’t want to wait until I’m perfect to spread my wings.
I don’t want to wait until there is no more sorrow,
in order to celebrate the moments you want to give me joy.
Give me courage to walk as your beloved,
made new by you.
Help me to step out in a new way,
to say yes to whatever you have for me today.
The real me. Loved by you. Today.
Amen.
All the moments you and I live in secret and out in the open is known.
Because you and I are loved completely. Unconditionally. Irrevocably.
Always. Again and again.
Let Easter is alive in you today.
Let’s get up and do what our two friends from Emmaus did.
They headed back to Jerusalem.
Back to hope. Back to new. To tell everyone what happened on their journey. To tell everyone how Jesus walked with them.
How they recognized Him. This time, they were changed. They were new.
It’s our time, friends. To do the same. To be walk as new people.
Beloved. Today.

I felt such despair this week, to the point that I thought death was better than life and really it is because I would be with Jesus. I now know that this despair I felt was coming from a place of fear deep within my heart, Fear that my life won’t change, that I won’t change. Fear that I’ll be stuck in this place of darkness. I had a job interview this week that left me vulnerable and insecure because I did not measure up to the psychological standard that corporate enforces their future employees to have. This is done though a written test. I didn’t fail but I didn’t pass either. Judged by a piece of paper rather than the heart. I fear I will not qualify for the job but I did step out and try something NEW. So new is my word for today. I’ve been waiting for something to happen for 3months and still I wait. Thank-you for your voice of encouragement today. I look forward to Wednesdays with you and my sisters in Jesus.
hi kimberly, i can relate to how you feel. i recently had some disappointing news when i thought a big door was opening for me. the great new is that we stepped out and like you said, we did something NEW. remember all we need to do is just one step today & you did that one step!! you go girl! now, what is that next one step you can take? give yourself permission to brainstorm, even as you grieve the disappointment of this job. you are His beloved. keep going! He is making everything new in you. if you feel overwhelmed and these feelings of despair aren’t lifting, be sure to confide in someone in the skin. I have some friends on speed dial and I invite myself over! or tell them I have to have dinner with them! 🙂 and if it’s more deeply hurting and can’t be shaken, please don’t hesitate to find a therapist to walk you through the pain. if you’ve read my book, Finding Spiritual Whitespace, you’ll see that I found Dr. P and God used him to help me uncover my heart to heal. hugs! thanks for sharing so vulnerably your #OneWordCoffee together!
Changed. Changed is my God-breathed word. So often I feel stuck even when I move in striving, trying to be more. And fear of the future keeps me believing in who the One says I am. Yes, I hadn’t paralleled that the disciples hopes had also diminished when Jesus died on. And then they saw Him. And remembered. Thank you for the reminder today He is always with us when we follow His ways into the new.
hi lynn, i love hearing the screen door of the faith barista cafe open and hear you share and enjoy a cup of #OneWordCoffee together. what do you think is a one next step God’s placing on your heart — for change? if you can share with us here or in the link up next Wed, I’d love to hear your journey and whisper a prayer with you. Just by expressing it, sharing your voice — being known — I think it helps a lot. hugs from CA to you.. #kindreds
Good Morning Bonnie! Well, today the word that comes to mind would be “Change”. Even when we do not notice it, God makes change happen in our lives as He is involved in every detail of our lives. I am glad that God takes us as we are and makes us into who we should be. He loves us enough to accept us as we are, but He does not let us stay that way. He changes us for the better and for His very best. This is a lesson I have been learning everyday. God Bless!
good morning, erica! oh, wow. change is such an inviting and full of promise and adventure — even if it makes me a little nervous. lol. Jesus is like that – He’s hears our hearts desires and sees straight into who He made us. what do you think is a one next step God’s placing on your heart — for change? if you can share with us here or in the link up next Wed, I’d love to hear your journey and whisper a prayer with you. Just by expressing it, sharing your voice — being known — I think it helps a lot. hugs from CA to you.. #kindreds

Good morning my sweet sister Bonnie. As I take this journey with you the one word in Rev. v. 5 that jumps out at me is faithful. Our Elder Brother Jesus is just that, faithful. He’ll never leave nor forsake us. No matter what we’re going through in life, no matter what Satan throws our way Jesus is faithful to see us through our tough times because the battle is not ours it belongs to the Lord. So this Easter season as we celebrate New Beginnings Bonnie if you’re going through any tough times let Jesus be faithful in your life and have Him help you through those tough times. I love you my sweet sister. Happy Easter.
good morning, beth!! so wonderful to hear your voice and enjoy a cup of #OneWordCoffee together. faithful. such a comforting and strengthening word. Just by expressing it, sharing your voice — being known — I think it helps a lot. hugs from CA to you.. #kindreds
Bonnie,
Brilliant words today as we walk into the celebration of Easter. The story of the men walking with Jesus on the road to Emmaus is one of my favorites. Love your insight about living a new way — we can’t go back to the old way, can we, because we have been so changed? And to keep moving forward is the only way to discover what God wants to do with us, through us and in us. Happy Easter, friend! xo
Hi Valerie! Happy Easter, friend! It’s going to be close to 4 years we’ve been kindreds here on this blog… i’m wondering what new beginning is God placing on your heart? “That silence you hear as you pour out your heart?
It’s me. I’m listening. To you.”
Powerful. Loved reading this. Thank you for sharing your heart and this space with us, Bonnie. It is beautiful.

I am so grateful he listens!
Sweet Katie!! how are you this week? love hearing your sweet voice here. and my heart is happy knowing you are feeling God’s listening heartbeat to yours. how is your husband?
Recovery from surgery is great. Waiting for endocrinologist appointment is hard to be patient til end of April.
My heart skipped a beat as I began to read your words, Bonnie.
It literally lined up with what I just posted. I am in awe!! God is so good and His reminders of never-ending love just make my heart have butterflies!
I love this part you wrote,
“When we hold onto Jesus’ hands, uncertainty isn’t something to be avoided, but a sure sign that we’re walking by faith — towards what our hearts really long to be.
Even if we may feel unsure or afraid, faith tells us we are actually pointed in the right direction.”
I understand when you say you go from inspired to discouraged easily. That is me and the doubt tries to bring me down. But I have finally decided if it brings me down to my knees then Jesus living in me has won anyways so the dark is fighting a losing battle.
I love this post. I think it is my favorite so far. It really is a great message and I love how you story-tell.
Be blessed, Bonnie!
hi meghan! that’s so encouraging to hear that something that spoke to my heart also speaks to you too. i’m always amazed and encouraged when i hear how God is speaking to you through something i share. it encourages me to keep sharing. so need you guys and this community here. 🙂 hope you have a sweet day with moments that encourage you. let’s keep stepping ahead new. as is!
sometimes i’m annoyed (with God? dare I say that??) that i, too, am given just one step at a time. BUT I’m learning that it’s okay to live by that one step – actually, better, as I force-rest myself and soul on the One Who knows me best and loves me anyway. (: (I just sighed really big in case you didn’t catch that…) Plus, He knows that I trip over myself when given multiple steps. Thank you for you and blessed comfort in the cracks of your disappointed soul. xx
i know – it is very frustrating at times — just one is so much harder. i just want to whole kit and k-boodle! 🙂 i hope you had a wonderful Easter, sue – wonderful to share #OneWordCoffee together!
“I”… The Lord Himself is making all things new… There is such comfort, strength and hope knowing that He is doing this… I cling on to hope as I journey forward…
He is whispering, “Be still, and know that I am God.”
beautiful, Christ. i hope you had a wonderful Easter – wonderful to share #OneWordCoffee together!
My #OneWordLent for today is TRUE. Jesus is faithful, His words are true, He said, “Write it!” I believe Him!
i hope you are letting the words flow to “write it!”. – i hope you had a wonderful Easter, diane – wonderful to share #OneWordCoffee together!
Hi Bonnie. This post really moved me to tears. I can so identify with going from inspired to discouraged so easily. And I feel this so deeply – “I’ve come so far. I don’t want to give up. But, I don’t know what to do.” I sometimes wish I wouldn’t teeter-totter so much between fear and trust. It encourages my heart that Jesus embraces both our insecure selves and our resurrected selves. I love the story of the Emmaus travelers. Sometimes Jesus is right beside and within us, and yet our eyes do not open to this beautiful truth. He is alive! Because He lives, we can face tomorrow! Have a joy-filled Easter! Hugs!
All I can say to this entire post is WOW, WOW, WOW……. You are speaking straight to my heart and you’re confirming things I’ve not told a soul. I’ve been walking through these past few months of the new year filled with new inspiration but yet the voices of discouragement and my own voice telling me “maybe I didn’t hear correctly” when I know what I heard are quite loud in my ears.
Your post today was a sweet blessing!
Happy Easter sweet friend! (((HUGS)))) 🙂
hi krista! oh, what i wouldn’t give to have a cup of coffee with you RIGHT NOW!! 🙂 i want to know what those things are? those critical voices are saying the same thing to me too! lol — let’s be bold step forward. email me if you ever need a friend to share these new things. will pray for you!! i hope you had a wonderful Easter – wonderful to share #OneWordCoffee together!
I don’t want to retreat anymore either. Often those two steps forward, the determination to run the race set before me, ends with a few steps back. God has been writing on my heart to “simply move” rather than try to determine “every move.” He’s been reminding me that His Spirit in me isn’t one of fear, but of power and love and a sound mind. Thank you for echoing His words and encouraging me to not take for granted to the gifts He has given. Always blessed by your authentic heart, Bonnie.
hi tiffany, i love “simply move” rather than “every move”. wow. that is powerful words straight from God’s whipsers onto your heart. i hope you had a wonderful Easter , tiffany – wonderful to share #OneWordCoffee together!
To walk a road that’s understood may seem safe, but it doesn’t require faith. It’s the walk of faith that leads to holy adventure, joy in the journey (as we see God at work), and greater strength of spirit. And praise God he won’t leave us in the middle of our journeys! With you I pray for courage to walk as God’s beloved, to step out in a new way and say yes to whatever he has for me each day. Thank you, Bonnie, for gently prodding us to press on!
yes, sweet friend – how are youd oing this week with “pressing on”? 🙂 i hope you had a wonderful Easter, nancy – wonderful to share #OneWordCoffee together!
Just wanted to thank you for this timely Scripture, Bonnie. Not only are your words in relation to the Scripture so encouraging to my own situation, but the verse is a blessing I am able to share with the Syrian refugee family I visit every Thursday. They have lost so much, so I am taking a little Easter basket with me today with a homemade card with the words “Behold, I am making all things new” in Dutch on the front and the inside telling them that I’m praying this verse over them. They are not Christians, but I believe God has placed them on my path for a reason (I was prompted by the pull of grief I felt in the Mom, to stop on my run to go sit down her, when she was sitting on the side of the path I was running on: I’ve been visiting them since then – June last year).
So thank you for letting God speak through you! And BTW: the word I feel impressed upon my heart is “all”, which in Hebrew means “the whole”- need a quiet moment to sit down and journal on it…been a hectic two weeks and my heart is grieving heavily at the moment (so I’m waiting for a longer quiet moment to sit at my Father’s feet).

In 2004, I went to see the movie “Passion of the Christ”. It was a difficult movie to watch as it was very graphic in what happened to Jesus especially the scenes of the scourging. However, there was one scene that stayed with me. Jesus meets His mother on the walk to Calvary and in that moment, covered in blood and in obvious pain, He smiles at her and says, “”See, mother, I make all things new.” That phrase has stayed with me to this day. I think on it when the world around me seems to be spinning out of control. I thought of it this week after watching the news about the bombing in Brussels and the vicious personal attacks by the presidential candidates on each other. I pray on it when it seems all God’s children want to do is hurt each other. I pray that all of God’s people will try to make things new for the better, I have hope.
it is a very difficult movie to watch. i watched it once and i don’t think i can watch it again. but, it’s images stay with me and help me so much to see and imagine the journey Jesus experienced and endured. i hope you had a wonderful Easter, Ellen – wonderful to share #OneWordCoffee together!
I’m so grateful that we are God’s beloved just as we are. Thanks for your continual encouraging words here, Bonnie! Beautiful truths. May you and your family have a special Easter! Love you.
i’m so thankful for your continuing friendship as the years unfold. i hope you and your family had a wonderful Easter and newness is continuing to speak to your heart today, lisa.
Not sure how, but somehow you summed up my day, and even my season with Him right now, with your beautiful words here. Thank you. I was encouraged by so many things you shared. Mostly that we don’t have to be perfect to be loved. And that it’s just okay for sorrow and joy to live side by side sometimes, and confidence and doubt. To not let one cancel the other, but just trust he’s beside me, loving me through all of it. Loving, rejoicing with me, patiently both listening and speaking. This is my Jesus. This is my Beloved.
hi angie, i’m so happy to know that you can hear and see your journey through these words — validating you, your journey and all you’re experiencing with Jesus. what a tender season you are in — both joy and sorrow together, intermingled with Jesus and all of us. wonderful to share #OneWordCoffee together!
Thank you Bonnie :)! This post spoke directly to my need. Just last night I wrote in my journal, “Father I feel hopeless and not daring to dream again”, I was writing to Him about a heart/relationship issue.
The story of the two friends going to Emmaus is one of my favorites, but I love the light you shed on this saying Jesus didn’t interrupted them when they were telling their story of despair, but He listened and asked, and then brought hope again.
For the last few weeks I’ve been on the road to Emmaus, like these two friends, walking in despair and disappointment, but Jesus met me today through your post and it’s time to go back to Jerusalem, to go back to hope and trust Jesus again with that part of my story and allow Him to breath life and hope again.
My one word is Hope.
God bless you Bonnie!
hi Jessica! it was so good to see you here on the blog!! i’m so happy this post spoke to your need – dare to dream again.. hope where you are longing for His touch ! wonderful to share #OneWordCoffee together!
